Learning outcomes
- Discuss Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples history and culture
- Explain the impact of past government practices (colonisation, removal from land, cultural dislocation) on Indigenous peoples health and well-being
- Use culturally appropriate communication with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
- Identify Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Patients in general practice.
- Review the Closing the Gap program, it’s implementation, outcomes and goals
Closing the Gap is a commitment to reduce the disadvantage in areas of health, housing, education and employment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. GPs have a key role to play in improving the quality of health services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. RACGP has made a commitment to raising general practitioner awareness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander needs and their cultural context and to advocating for culturally appropriate health delivery systems that improve health outcomes.
