Learning outcomes 

  • Discuss Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples history and culture
  • Explain the impact of past government practices (colonisation, removal from land, cultural dislocation) on Indigenous peoples health and well-being
  • Use culturally appropriate communication with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
  • Identify Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Patients in general practice.
  • Review the Closing the Gap program, it’s implementation, outcomes and goals

Closing the Gap is a commitment to reduce the disadvantage in areas of health, housing, education and employment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.  GPs have a key role to play in improving the quality of health services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. RACGP has made a commitment to raising general practitioner awareness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander needs and their cultural context and to advocating for culturally appropriate health delivery systems that improve health outcomes. The First Nations Cultural Awareness Training Program is in 3 modules. Average time to complete is 35 min per module!
